Volunteers are the heart and soul of ISI Albuquerque.
We want you to have the opportunity to positively affect the lives of students and scholars from all over the world. Below are just a few ways you can touch the
life of an international student.

Be a Friendship Partner
As a Friendship Partner you will have the opportunity to form relationships with international students. How each friendship looks will depend on the needs of your international student and your individual personalities. We advise contacting your student at least once a month to talk, ask how your student is doing, offer assistance, or do an activity together.
Your help and friendship will make such a positive impact on their time here in the U.S. Below is an excerpt from a student's letter which they sent to ISI Albuquerque describing what a difference our volunteers made in his life. "It is amazing that a year has passed since I came to Albuquerque. I remember when I came and my mind was full of doubts. However, the people I met through your organization became my guardian angels. I just want to thank you, you all have taught me the importance of helping our fellow humans and the richness one gains in doing so. Thank you very much!" ISI Albuquerque asks each of our volunteers to attend a short training session which covers cultural sensitivity and outlines all the ways ISI volunteers can help students here in Albuquerque. If you are interested in becoming a Friendship Partner please contact [email protected]. We will let you know when the next ISI volunteer training is scheduled.

English Tutors & Conversation PartnersISI Albuquerque in partnership with local ESL ministries offers English Corner on Monday evenings at the Christian Challenge Building (BSU), 401 University Blvd. NE during the Fall and Spring semesters.
English Corner (conversation practice) is from 6:00pm-7:00pm and is an opportunity for volunteers to help international students practice conversing in English. This is a great way to meet people from all over the world and start friendships. English Class is a group class based on ability and is offered from 7-9pm. During the Summer semester, English Corner is offered at the BSU on Monday nights during June and July from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Volunteers can also sign up to be personal English Tutors to provide one-on-one help with pronunciation and English conversation to a student. As an English Tutor you will spend one hour (or more) per week with your assigned student. ESL provides free tutor training as well, so you do not need to be a professional teacher or have prior tutoring experience. For more information you can contact [email protected]. Host a Hiking /Sightseeing TripYou can volunteer to organize a hike or sight-seeing trip for a group of international students, or sign up as a volunteer driver. Organizers are responsible for picking out a destination, emailing students, and coordinating drivers. New Mexico is full of beautiful sights. This is a great way to spend time with your international friends and meet a few more.
